Created with the Paul Cutlan Trio for Sydney Festival, and subsequently taken to Edinburgh, Germany & Melbourne. The Band & I always jump at the chance to hit the road with Kerouak, Ginsberg, Burroughs & Ferlinghetti in this recreation of  the Beat generation and the Jazz-Jam they dug.

Devised in collaboration with the Paul Cutlan Trio: (Cutlan, composer & sax and clarinet; Fabian Hevia, drums, percussion, vibes; Steve Arie, bass). A seductive evening of cool words and hot jazz. The show has played Sydney, Edinburgh, Recklinghausen (Germany) and Melbourne Festivals, with two revivals in Sydney, and varies from 75 to 120 minutes – muso improvisation makes it very elastic to suit the occasion. An evening of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William S Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Gregory Corso performed by John Turnbull, seamlessly interspersed with authentic jazz of the beat generation.

Selections of Birth Of The Cool live in performance can be found under Video on the main menu. Radio studio selections can be found under Audio on the main menu.

I would love nothing more than to take this pulsing bag of hot beats back on the road where it belongs. If you have a interest in a Birth Of The Cool revival or simply an opinion, I welcome either; preferably both. As ever, comments welcome.
