John has worked all over Australia, the U.K. and also in Italy. Active in Drama at Newcastle University (N.S.W.), he established his own theatre after graduating, and performed and directed in Newcastle prior to heading for London in the 70's. En route he settled in Rome for two years, and set up the English speaking company - Teatro nella Cripta - which programmed Orton, Hampton, Pinter and Osborne, along with Shakepeare and Wilde. He has worked in various films, and in dubbing studios over a two year period.
In London he worked at The Kings Head, The Old Red Lion and The Almost Free, then joined the Midland Arts Theatre in Birmingham. Then came work at the Bristol Old Vic (Lock Up Your Daughters), Theatre Clwydd in Wales (Hamlet,
Marching Song, The Cherry Orchard, School For Scandal) and the Chichester Festival Theatre (The Schoolmistress, School For Scandal,
Lady Windermere's Fan, The Rivals). Both School For Scandal (in which he played Sir Benjamin Backbite) and The Rivals (Fag) toured nationally and the latter also played in the West End. For Vienna's English Theatre he was Puck in
A Midsummer Night's Dream and Norman in The Dresser.
Back in Australia he has worked regularly with the Bell Shakespeare Company (including Bardolph in Henry 4 and 5, Thersites in Troilus and Cressida, Clifford in Henry 6) With the Australian Chamber Orchestra he toured as the Devil in
A Soldier's Tale.
At the Nimrod Theatre under Director Richard Cottrell he appeared in Wild Honey, The Merchant of Venice, All's Well That Ends Well and She Stoops to Conquer.
For the Sydney Theatre Company - Major Barbara and Away. For the South Australian Theatre Company -
The Revenger's Tragedy. For the Melbourne Theatre Company - Capricornia and Accidental Death of an Anarchist.
For New Moon Theatre Company(Queensland) - Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Key Largo, Don's Party, On Our Selection, Trumpets and Raspberries and Guys and Dolls.
Other theatre work in Sydney includes God Only Knows, Henceforward and Things We Do For Love at Marian Street,
Only Heaven Knows and Blood and Honour for Gay Mardi Gras at the Griffin and Belvoir Street.
